Honorable Mention

On Rte. 62 east of Twentynine Palms, in the Southern California desert, is the Rice shoe fence. At first there was a tamarisk tree there that people decorated with underwear. After the tree burned, shoes were tossed on the charred branches. The tree burned to the ground in 2003, so people then tossed their shoes on the nearby fence, which is now covered with shoes and other “memorabilia”, including underwear of various types. The weight of all the shoes has pulled the fence down in places. You could say the main subject of this photo is the flip flop in the middle questioning why, but conforming anyway, which is why my husband suggested the name I used for this photo.
